The U.S. President suffered severe criticism from all walks of American society for backing down on the Palestinian condition that the Jewish United States Army soldiers undergo a selection process and prevent them from reaching the Land of Israel. The New York Post wrote a fervent editorial in which it was determined that "a heavy shadow has been cast on our morality and our duty to assist the citizens of the former State of Israel. This was tainted with pure racism, since for sixty years there has not been any talk of separating Jews from other people". The Russian Prime Minister was heard to be surprised and "full of protest" at the aggression of the United States against the occupying Arab countries. Even the French government sent a sharp telegram of protest against the intolerable American intervention. Nonetheless, the French Prime Minister also announced an immediate humanitarian shipment of French Army soldiers to help operate field hospitals in the Tel-Aviv area and environs. The British government and additional European governments issued provisional orders instructing all Israeli citizens in their countries to register at the (former) Israeli embassies. The intentions of the British government or the other governments in regard to the Israeli citizens was not revealed. To the BBC question, the British Prime Minister only replied that "at this time we are only gathering information on the Israeli citizens within our borders and it has not yet been decided what their status shall be. What is certain," said the Prime Minister, "is that there is no intention of returning them in boats to Palestinian soil. The journey of the Exodus ended in 1948". That's all folks |
